Border Authorities Foil 40 Million Dinar Customs Fraud at Munziriya Crossing
Iraq's Border Crossings Commission has prevented the loss of more than 40 million Iraqi dinars after uncovering an attempt to evade customs duties by falsely declaring electrical cables as raw copper at the Munziriya border crossing.
Attempt to Evade Customs Duties
The Border Crossings Commission announced that it had prevented the loss of 40,000,509 Iraqi dinars through the careful inspection of cargo shipments that had been misclassified in an attempt to reduce customs fees.
Electrical Cables Declared as Raw Copper
At the Munziriya border crossing, authorities intercepted two cargo trucks carrying electrical cables. According to the commission, the shipments had been falsely declared as "raw copper" to benefit from the lower customs tariff applied to copper instead of processed electrical cables.
Inspection Uncovers the Fraud
Following the seizure of the shipments, a specialized committee carried out a detailed inspection and investigation. The review found that the false declarations would have resulted in the loss of 40,000,509 Iraqi dinars in state revenue. Authorities said the drivers attempted to falsify the cargo descriptions to avoid paying the correct customs duties.
Legal Action Taken
The Border Crossings Commission confirmed that both drivers have been referred for legal proceedings. It also reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the Prime Minister's directives by strengthening oversight at border crossings, combating corruption, preventing customs fraud, protecting public funds, and increasing state revenues.
