Following an official visit by the Iraqi Foreign Minister to Kuwait and his meetings with Kuwaiti officials, five Iraqi fishermen who had previously been detained in maritime border waters have been released.
Release of the Fishermen and Their Return to Basra
The Iraqi Foreign Minister announced that the Iraqi fishermen detained by Kuwaiti authorities have been released. He noted that following the completion of the legal procedures for their release, the fishermen will return to the Basra governorate today, Thursday.
Diplomatic Efforts and Gratitude to Kuwait
During his official visit to the State of Kuwait, Fuad Hussein requested the release of the fishermen from Fahd Youssef Saud, Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister, who subsequently granted the request. The Iraqi Foreign Minister thanked the Kuwaiti authorities for their positive cooperation and emphasized that this step reflects the depth of the brotherly relations between the two countries in resolving shared issues.
Details of the Detention at the Maritime Border
Last week, the Kuwaiti Coast Guard seized an Iraqi fishing boat along with its 5-member crew, who are from the town of Al-Faw in southern Basra. The incident took place within the maritime borders between Iraq and Kuwait, specifically in the "Khor Abdullah" area, a region that has previously witnessed similar incidents due to the proximity of fishing zones along those borders.
