Iraq Seizes Another 14 Billion Dinars Hidden in Sewage Network in Adnan al-Jumaili Corruption Case
Iraqi authorities have uncovered another 14 billion Iraqi dinars hidden inside a sewage network as part of the ongoing corruption investigation involving former Ministry of Oil Undersecretary Adnan al-Jumaili. The latest seizure brings the total value of recovered cash and assets to more than 141 billion Iraqi dinars and $24 million, in addition to properties, vehicles, and gold.
14 Billion Dinars Found in Sewage Network
The Supreme Judicial Council announced that investigators recovered an additional 14 billion Iraqi dinars during continued efforts to trace embezzled state funds linked to Adnan al-Jumaili and other suspects.
According to the council, the money was concealed in bags hidden inside a rainwater sewage manhole connected to one of the projects associated with the case.
The council said the latest discovery was made during ongoing investigations and confirmed that efforts remain underway to identify and pursue all individuals implicated in the corruption case involving the former Ministry of Oil undersecretary.
According to official figures released by Iraqi authorities, the total value of recovered assets has reached more than 141 billion Iraqi dinars and $24 million.
Authorities have also seized a number of properties, vehicles, and more than 8 kilograms of gold, all of which are being returned to the state.
How Adnan al-Jumaili Was Arrested
Adnan al-Jumaili, the former Ministry of Oil Undersecretary for Refining Affairs and Director of the North Refineries Company and Baiji Refinery, was arrested on May 30, 2026, in the Ishaqi area of Saladdin province.
The operation was carried out by a special force under the direction of Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi. Al-Jumaili faces charges related to financial and administrative corruption involving the Baiji Refinery.
According to Iraqi authorities, his confessions during the investigation led to the identification of dozens of other suspects.
The Iraqi government said 22 people have been arrested as part of the anti-corruption campaign, most of them members of parliament, including Azm Coalition leader Muthanna al-Samarrai.
However, media reports indicate the number of arrests has reached 67.
Where the Money and Gold Were Hidden
Authorities have recovered cash and valuables from multiple locations linked to the investigation, including:
- Nearly $20 million and 5 kilograms of gold were hidden inside plastic water containers at al-Jumaili's house in Tikrit.
- $5 million and several billion Iraqi dinars concealed inside a bread-baking oven (tandoor).
- Nearly 20 billion Iraqi dinars were recovered from a farm.
- 24 billion Iraqi dinars buried four meters underground.
- $3 million and 700 million Iraqi dinars were found inside one of his houses.
- 14 billion Iraqi dinars concealed inside a rainwater sewage manhole.
