An estimated 10 million people participated in the two-day farewell processions for the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the provinces of Najaf and Karbala, according to an announcement by Iraq's Higher Committee for the Funeral of Ali Khamenei.

Following the massive public demonstrations on Tuesday and Wednesday, the bodies of Khamenei and four of his family members were officially transported from Najaf to the Iranian city of Mashhad on Thursday morning for final burial.

State Coordination and Logistics

The Iraqi government mobilized multiple sectors to handle the large-scale logistics of the multi-day event, reporting no significant operational failures.

  • Execution Window: The state-managed funeral plan was executed across Tuesday and Wednesday under high-level coordination between federal and provincial bodies.
  • Inter-Agency Cooperation: Ministries, municipal government departments, and the administrative secretariats of the holy shrines in Najaf and Karbala were deployed to manage the dense crowds.
  • Security and Transit: Ihsan Al-Awadi, head of the organizing committee and director of the Prime Minister’s Office, confirmed that the mobilization concluded with no major security disruptions or logistical obstacles recorded for the mourning convoys or citizens.

Geopolitical Alignment and Official Statements

The scale of the processions was leveraged by domestic political entities to emphasize the strategic and ideological ties between Iraq and Iran.

The Shia Coordination Framework, the dominant political coalition in the Iraqi parliament—issued a formal statement praising the massive turnout as a reflection of national loyalty. The coalition stated that the public turnout demonstrated that the Iraqi people remain dedicated to those who historically supported their political and religious causes, framing the event as a significant display of bilateral solidarity.

Following the conclusion of the Iraqi leg of the ceremonies, a transport operation at 8:30 AM on Thursday successfully transferred the five caskets to Mashhad, Iran, where the final interments took place.
