Syria's Ministry of Interior has announced the arrest of a senior ISIS leader during a large-scale security operation, saying authorities also detained all members of the militant cell responsible for last week's bombings in Damascus.

Senior ISIS Leader Arrested in Security Operation

In an official statement, the ministry said the arrested ISIS leader was identified as Firas Daghir.

According to the ministry, he was captured during a large-scale security operation carried out by Syrian forces.

According to the Ministry of Interior, Daghir held several senior positions within ISIS.

The ministry said he most recently served as the group's Governor of Lebanon and Palestine and also acted as a personal bodyguard to the ISIS caliph.

Cell Behind Damascus Bombings Dismantled

The ministry said a special task force, in coordination with the General Intelligence Directorate, conducted simultaneous operations across Damascus and the Damascus Countryside.

The raids targeted al-Qutayfah, Sayyidah Zaynab, Dahiyat Qudsaya, and Osh el-Werwer, resulting in the arrest of all members of the cell accused of carrying out last week's bombings in Damascus.

The ministry said investigations found that the detained cell was also involved in the killing and robbery of several goldsmiths in Daraa.

According to the statement, the stolen gold was used to finance ISIS activities.
