President Amedi and Minister Abdulwahid Align National Strategies to Tackle Iraq's Climate Challenges
Iraqi President Nizar Amedi and Environment Minister Srwa Abdulwahid aligned national policies on Iraq's climate challenges, combining ministry pollution programs with a unified state approach to safeguard national sovereignty.
President Amedi met with Minister Abdulwahid at Baghdad Palace on Sunday, during which both “reviewed the state of Iraq's environmental sector and the pressing challenges it faces.”
Amedi stressed that environmental stewardship has "transcended the realm of public service delivery" to become an "issue of national sovereignty."
He called for a unified government approach built on close institutional coordination to enhance Iraq's resilience against urgent climate-related challenges.
Flagship Initiatives to Curb Pollution
Meanwhile, Abdulwahid outlined the Ministry's flagship programs and ongoing initiatives, highlighting "the measures being undertaken to reduce pollution" and "strengthen environmental governance" to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
Minister Warns of Legal Action to Combat Water and Air Pollution
The Minister of Environment Abdulwahid pledged to eliminate air and water pollution over the next four years by enhancing oversight and penalizing non-compliant firms.
Furthermore, she warned that any institution causing environmental harm will be held legally accountable to protect public health.
Ministry Advances Climate Strategy With UN Partnerships
The Ministry of Environment has advanced its national climate strategy through a series of key actions, including leading preparatory meetings for the upcoming COP31 summit.
To strengthen domestic oversight, the ministry secured strategic partnerships with the United Nations and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to deploy advanced environmental monitoring systems.
Furthermore, regulatory frameworks have been expanded to incorporate legal enforcement of religious edicts aimed at preventing river pollution and protecting public water safety.
