German Court Sentences Iraqi Couple for Enslaving Two Yazidi Girls in Syria

A German court has sentenced an Iraqi couple for enslaving two Yazidi girls in Syria, convicting them of multiple crimes committed between 2015 and 2017 before they fled to Germany.

Crimes Committed Between 2015 and 2017

The Munich court sentenced the husband, identified by his initials Twana H. S., to life imprisonment. His wife, Asia R. A., was sentenced to nine years and six months in prison.

The court found that the couple committed the crimes against the two Yazidi girls in Syria between October 2015 and December 2017.

According to the case, the couple purchased a five-year-old Yazidi girl as a slave in 2015 and later bought a 12-year-old Yazidi girl in 2017.

The court heard that the couple forced the girls to perform household chores and care for their children.

In addition, Twana was convicted of sexually assaulting the girls.

The court also upheld charges related to the physical abuse of the 12-year-old girl and found that Asia burned the younger girl's hand.

According to the court's ruling, the couple prohibited the girls from practicing their Yazidi religion and forced them to follow Islamic practices instead.

Flight to Germany and Arrest

After handing the two girls over to other ISIS militants in November 2017, the couple left Syria and traveled to Germany.

They were arrested by police in southern Germany in April 2024.

Victim Testifies in Court

One of the Yazidi girls attended the trial and was present as the court delivered its verdict. As the sentences were read, tears rolled down her cheeks.

During her testimony, she told the court:

"Dogs had more value than us; our childhood was nothing but misery."
