KRG Ministry Announces Temporary Power Reduction Following Khor Mor Security Incident
The Ministry of Electricity of the Kurdistan Regional Government announced that a security incident has caused a temporary drop in power generation, noting that authorities are actively working to resume the normal gas supply.
"Due to a security incident at the Khor Mor field, gas supply to power generation plants has decreased, resulting in a 2,500-megawatt reduction in electricity production," the ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
The ministry informed consumers that the disruption is temporary, confirming that all relevant authorities are actively working to resume gas exports to the power generation plants.
Dana Gas Suspends Operations Over Security Threats
Dana Gas, a private-sector natural gas enterprise, stated earlier that it has temporarily suspended operations at Sulaymaniyah’s Khor Mor gas field.
The firm said the shutdown was enacted as a precautionary measure due to credible security threats and escalating regional tensions.
Furthermore, the company added that it continues to monitor the situation in close cooperation with both KRG and federal authorities.
Khor Mor Gas Shutdown Significantly Impacts Kurdistan Power Grid
The Khor Mor field is the most critical energy asset in the Kurdistan Region, supplying the primary natural gas required to fuel up to 80% of the power plants; its temporary shutdown will have a significant impact on 24-hour electricity.
Following the collapse of the maritime security framework between the United States and Iran, hostilities have heightened in recent days, as Erbil was attacked by eight drones yesterday.
The temporary shutdown by Dana Gas comes after similar drone actions hit the Port of Basra and the Al-Faw Grand Port.
