The Kurdistan Region Presidency on Friday strongly condemned the recent wave of missile and drone strikes targeting the region, characterizing the resumption of violence as a "dangerous escalation" and a direct violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

The official executive statement follows a series of early-morning aerial attacks on July 17, 2026, which targeted both the regional capital of Erbil and several rural communities in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate.

Threat to Regional Stability

In its formal statement, the presidency warned that the unchecked resumption of hostilities threatens to derail broader security gains achieved in recent months.

According to the presidency, the attacks:

• Directly undermine the security and stability of both the Kurdistan Region and the federal state of Iraq.
• Constitute a blatant violation of international norms and Iraqi national sovereignty.
• Place severe obstacles in the way of ongoing regional peace and stabilization efforts.

The presidency called on all relevant authorities to take immediate, decisive action to halt the aggression and prevent further security breaches.
