Authorities in Slemani have launched the first phase of a plan to relocate oil refineries and fuel storage facilities from the Tanjaro area, aiming to reduce environmental pollution by moving the sites away from residential neighborhoods within six months.

New Fuel Complex Under Construction

Taha Hussein, supervisor of the Petroleum Products Complex project, said construction of the new facility began one month ago. Located outside Slemani and away from residential areas, the complex is expected to accommodate all fuel storage and distribution sites currently operating in Tanjaro within the next six months.

Plan to Reorganize Refineries and Depots

Salam Omar, spokesperson for the Slemani Directorate of Oil and Minerals, said the project is designed to reorganize local oil refineries and fuel depots under a unified framework.

He said refineries, fuel storage yards, and processing facilities in Tanjaro will be relocated in stages and brought into compliance with environmental regulations aimed at reducing pollution and limiting further environmental damage.

Fuel Yard Owners Notified

Baban Ahmed, head of the Joint Committees at the Slemani Governorate, said owners of fuel storage sites in Tanjaro have been officially notified to prepare for relocation.

According to local officials, the move marks the beginning of efforts to address the smoke and petroleum waste that have affected the Tanjaro area for years.
