Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a phone call on Wednesday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations, with a particular focus on economic cooperation, investment, trade, and migration.

Focus on Economic Partnership

During the call, the two leaders reviewed ways to expand cooperation across various sectors, particularly in the fields of the economy, trade, investment, and migration.

Prime Minister al-Zaidi reaffirmed Iraq’s interest in deepening economic ties with Germany and encouraging German companies to invest in the country. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to establish a joint Iraqi-German fund to finance projects aimed at developing Iraq’s industrial sector.

Iraq Reaffirms Reform Agenda

Al-Zaidi stressed that the Iraqi government remains committed to combating corruption in all its forms and creating an open, attractive investment environment as part of its strategy to diversify the national economy.

He described Germany as an important economic partner and acknowledged its continued support for Iraq.

Germany Backs Investment and Reform Efforts

Chancellor Merz reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Iraq across multiple sectors.

He extended an official invitation to Prime Minister al-Zaidi to visit Germany and reiterated Berlin’s support for the Iraqi government’s economic and financial reform agenda.

Merz also confirmed the readiness of German companies to expand their investments in Iraq.
