Kurdistan Region Presidency spokesperson Dilshad Shahab said Syria has begun formal steps to open a consulate in Erbil.
The announcement came during Nechirvan Barzani's official visit to Damascus, where he held talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

According to Shahab, Barzani extended an official invitation to al-Sharaa to visit both the Kurdistan Region and the Iraqi federal government in Baghdad.
