Key Statements and Focus Areas

  • Several media outlets reported that Iraqi intelligence agencies successfully thwarted a plot targeting Judge Faiq Zidan.
  • The Services (Khadamat) Alliance confirmed the threat and denounced it in “the strongest possible terms,” labeling it “a blatant assault on the prestige of the state and its constitutional and judicial institutions.”

According to Iraqi and Arab reports, the conspirators reportedly intended to carry out the assassination using a drone.

Security forces have now implemented strict and heightened security measures around Zidan, his residence, and his workplace to ensure his protection.

Meanwhile, the Services Alliance issued a statement and reaffirmed the judiciary's role in safeguarding rights and the rule of law, adding, “We firmly reject any attempt to undermine its independence or influence its decisions.”

“As we highly appreciate the judiciary's efforts in supporting the state's reform initiatives, we believe these threats originate from factions negatively impacted by anti-corruption measures, as well as outlaws seeking to disrupt the path of reform and block efforts to restrict weapons to state control,” the statement noted.

The alliance urged “decisive legal action” to expose the involved entities and safeguard the prestige of the state.

The party urged the judicial and executive institutions to eliminate corruption networks and advance governance reforms to build a secure state that protects its constitutional bodies.

FYI

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi has intensified efforts to restrict weapons to state control by setting a strict September 30 deadline for armed groups to disarm or face counter-terrorism prosecution.

Backed by the judiciary, this comprehensive crackdown includes shutting down illicit militia bases and creating a national firearms database to neutralize unauthorized armed factions.

The targeting of Iraq's top judicial official stems from two highly contentious files currently overseen by the judiciary.

These include Judge Zidan’s strict drive to establish a legal framework restricting weapons to state custody, alongside sweeping anti-graft campaigns that recently stripped corrupt lawmakers of their legal immunity.
