Key Statements and Focus Area

  • Fuad Hussein “condemned the unjustified attack and requested clarification of the official Iranian position regarding the incident.”
  • Abbas Araghchi “expressed his surprise at the occurrence of such an attack.”

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday that Hussein held a phone call with Araghchi to discuss today’s attack on Barzani’s office.

Hussein noted that Iran previously justified attacks by citing local opposition groups. “However, the latest attack directly targeted the residence of the President of the KRG, making it a dangerous precedent that could further escalate tensions and threaten regional stability.”

He emphasized that such acts constitute “a dangerous escalation” that could have negative repercussions for Iraq’s security and regional stability.

Hussein urged Iran to issue an official statement clarifying the reasons and parties behind the attack.

During the phone conversation, Araghchi clarified that “he had no information indicating that the attacks had originated from Iranian territory.”

He also underlined that the positive ties between Iran and the KRG left no justification for the attack.

Araghchi further “reaffirmed his country’s rejection of anything that could fuel escalation or undermine stability and pledged to issue an official statement clarifying the Iranian Government’s position on the incident.”

Kurdish leaders and officials strongly condemned the drone strikes, labeling the targeting of senior administrative and intelligence infrastructure an escalation that directly threatens stability of Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi launched an immediate investigation into the incident, demanding official clarification regarding the cross-border attacks to safeguard the nation's security.
