Key Statements and Focus Areas

  • Channel8 has learned that the accompanying delegation includes Political Bureau members Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, Imad Ahmad, Hawre Sheikh Daro, and Ahmad Hama Karim, alongside Jalal Sheikh Naji, Head of the Protection and Information Agency.
  • Iran extended an official invitation to the PUK delegation through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

PUK President Talabani is scheduled to meet today in Tehran with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

Discussions are expected to center on Washington-Tehran tensions, regional challenges, and ongoing de-escalation efforts.

Talabani will also deliver a clear message to the Iranian leadership on preserving regional stability and keeping the Kurdistan Region insulated from the US-Iran conflict.

FYI

The PUK President previously traveled to Tehran in July 2026 to join international dignitaries at the official farewell ceremonies for the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Talabani also spoke by phone with Foreign Minister Araghchi on August 11, stressing that “continued dialogue and diplomatic engagement are the most effective path toward de-escalation, the restoration of peace and stability, and safeguarding the interests of all peoples in the region.”

Today's visit comes amid severe regional military friction involving Iran and the United States. As conflicts in West Asia threaten to expand, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq finds itself in a vulnerable position.

PUK leadership is actively employing a preventative diplomatic strategy to ensure that Kurdistan is not used as a military launchpad or a proxy battlefield between Washington and Tehran.

Reflecting on his position regarding the regional conflict to major media outlets, Talabani has continuously stressed the need for peaceful mediation, warning that using the region as a "tip of the spear" in broader conflicts would only trigger a disastrous humanitarian crisis.

He has consistently condemned violations of Iraqi sovereignty while advocating for peace and dialogue, balancing his message with calls for extreme military restraint to protect civilian lives.
