Khor Mor And Regional Power Supply

Khor Mor, located in the Chamchamal area of Sulaymaniyah Governorate, is a major source of fuel for power generation in the Kurdistan Region. The field supplies gas to power stations in Chamchamal, Bazian and Erbil and supports more than 2,000 megawatts of generation capacity.

The field's importance has increased following the KM250 expansion, which entered service in October 2025 and raised Khor Mor's processing capacity to about 750 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.

Khor Mor has also become part of Iraq's wider electricity supply network. Since August, Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum have supplied 100 million standard cubic feet per day from the field to the federal Electricity Ministry's Taza power station in Kirkuk under a one-year agreement.

Recent Security And Supply Disruptions

The latest disruption comes after a more serious interruption in July, when Dana Gas suspended Khor Mor production following what it described as credible security threats. The shutdown contributed to a reported 2,500-megawatt decline in electricity generation across the Kurdistan Region.

The repeated interruptions highlight the dependence of the Region's electricity network on a relatively concentrated gas supply system. Khor Mor's role has become particularly important as the KRG expands its Runaki program, which aims to provide continuous public electricity and reduce reliance on neighborhood diesel generators. More than 90 percent of the Region's population was reported to have access to round-the-clock electricity through Runaki as of early September.
