Flight Diverts To Tabuk
FlyDubai flight FZ 1073 was traveling from Dubai to Ben Gurion Airport when it issued an emergency alert about two and a half hours after departure.
Public flight tracking data showed the aircraft descend rapidly from about 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet within roughly a minute. It then made an irregular turn near the Jordanian border before continuing toward Tabuk.
The aircraft landed at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport at about 9:45 a.m. local time, following a distress call at 8:44 a.m., according to the airport.
FlyDubai confirmed that the aircraft had experienced an incident and diverted to Tabuk.
Pilots Taken To Hospital
Two officials said the incident involved a fight between pilots in the cockpit. One Israeli official said one of the pilots was armed with a knife, although the circumstances surrounding the confrontation remained unclear.
The captain and first officer were injured and taken to hospital, according to a statement from the Tabuk airport carried by Saudi State Television.
Authorities questioned members of the crew as part of the investigation. It was not immediately clear whether anyone had been detained.
Israel Scrambles Warplanes
Israel sent fighter jets toward the aircraft after authorities became concerned that the incident could involve an attempted hijacking.
The aircraft was carrying dozens of Israelis. Passengers told Israeli television that they heard shouting from the forward section of the plane and experienced a steep descent before the aircraft landed in Saudi Arabia.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said the situation was under control and that Israel was working to bring the passengers home.
The incident comes as Israel approaches the anniversary of the October 7, 2023, attack, and amid heightened security concerns.
Saudi Arabia Coordinates Emergency Landing
Saudi Arabia does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel, but it ended its longstanding ban on Israeli aircraft flying through its airspace in 2022.
