The investigation follows an incident during celebrations marking Iraq’s Sovereignty Day, which coincided with the completion of the U.S.-led coalition’s military mission in Iraq.

Al-Zaidi directed the committee to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and instructed authorities to take the necessary legal measures against those found responsible.

The order comes as Baghdad seeks to emphasize state authority and diplomatic norms following the end of the coalition’s military mission and the transition to a bilateral security relationship with the United States.

FYI

The investigation carries both domestic and diplomatic significance. Iraq formally ended the U.S.-led coalition’s military mission on September 30, while Washington has said bilateral security cooperation, including training and intelligence support, will continue. Against that backdrop, the government’s response signals an emphasis on protecting diplomatic norms and maintaining state control over public events.
