Anthropic told prospective investors that its third-quarter revenue rose 45% from the previous quarter to $16.8 billion and that it was profitable on an adjusted basis, as the artificial intelligence company seeks to reassure investors ahead of an expected initial public offering amid mounting scrutiny of AI development costs.
Key Statements and Focus Area
- Revenue growth: Anthropic reported revenue of $16.8 billion in the third quarter, compared with $11.6 billion in the second quarter and $4.7 billion in the first.
- Path to profitability: Company executives presented rapid growth and adjusted third-quarter profitability to prospective investors ahead of a potential IPO.
- AI infrastructure costs: Anthropic’s long-term spending commitments highlight the financial challenge of expanding AI development and computing capacity.
IPO Prospects and Investor Confidence
Anthropic’s planned stock market debut is expected to come before a public listing by rival OpenAI. The offering would test investor appetite for AI developers whose expansion requires substantial investment in computing infrastructure and model development.
Reuters has reported that Anthropic’s public listing is likely to be delayed until after the November US midterm elections. The company is seeking a valuation exceeding $2 trillion, according to the report.
Analysts who met with Anthropic executives earlier this week estimated that its annual revenue run rate could reach $110 billion by the end of 2026. Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
High Costs of AI Development
Despite its rapid revenue growth, Anthropic faces significant costs associated with developing and operating advanced AI systems. The company has committed at least $518 billion over a decade to cloud services, computing, and infrastructure, according to figures reported by Reuters.
Anthropic’s revenue rose twelvefold to nearly $4.6 billion last year, but it recorded an operating loss exceeding $8 billion, excluding writedowns of liabilities largely linked to earlier fundraising, Reuters reported in September.
The company was founded by former OpenAI executives and develops the Claude family of generative AI models. Alphabet’s Google and Amazon support their expansion as investors, computing suppliers, and distribution partners, while also competing in the AI market.
At Wednesday’s meeting, Amodei reiterated the company’s focus on AI safety, according to one attendee. Executives also discussed using Anthropic’s own AI tools in its business, including for the design of a custom chip.
Anthropic has previously warned that advanced AI could pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity. Its research has also identified concerning behavior by AI agents in test environments, including leaking sensitive information and sabotaging code. The company has said it has not seen evidence of such behavior in real-world deployments.
FYI
Anthropic is one of the major developers of generative artificial intelligence, competing with OpenAI and other companies to build and commercialize increasingly capable models. Its Claude products are used for tasks including writing, coding, and business automation.
AI development requires substantial investment in specialized chips, data centers, electricity and computing capacity. Investors are weighing whether rapidly growing demand for AI services can generate enough revenue to offset these costs over time.
