Winter weather shuts down roads across Kurdistan in Iran

Roads in 505 villages in Kurdistan province in Iran have been closed due to heavy snowfall.

Salahaddin Mohammadi, deputy director of roads and transportation in Kurdistan province, said roads in 505 villages of the province have been closed due to snowfall, including 10 villages in Sanandaj, 20 villages in Saqqez, 200 villages in Bijar, 100 villages in Divandarreh, 20 villages in Kamyaran, five in Marivan, 90 in Qorveh and 60 villages in Dehgolan.

“Traffic has stopped there now. Municipal teams are cleaning the roads, but due to continuous snowfall, not all roads can be cleaned easily,” Mohammadi said.

Sanandaj is the capital of Kurdistan Province. The province has a population of 2 million, and the most important cities are Sanandaj, Saqqez, Baneh, Marivan, Kamyaran, and Bijar. Mountainous areas experience heavy snowfall in the winter.
