Following the recent arrival of animals in the ports of Basra from Brazil, the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture has assured the public of the animals’ safety.

Mohammed Khuzai, spokesperson for the ministry, told Channel8 that “all the imported animals underwent thorough veterinary inspections and were found to be free of any diseases.”

The process of unloading the ship and transporting the animals to various provinces in Iraq has already commenced.

Additional shipments of animals are expected to reach Iraq in the upcoming days for purposes of both slaughter and breeding.

This initiative comes amidst a rise in meat prices to over 20,000 dinars per kilogram after recent events in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.

To address this, the Iraqi government has permitted imports from reliable countries like Brazil. The recent arrival of 19,000 animals from Brazil at Basra port marks the beginning, with another 40,000 animals scheduled to be imported to meet the demand.
