US House of Representatives approves TikTok ban bill

The US House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a bill on Wednesday that would force TikTok to divest from its Chinese owner or face a ban in the United States.

The members of Congress voted 325 in favor and 65 against, with unusual bipartisan unity.

A ban of TikTok would have a vast effect on the United States, where tens of millions of users watch it daily

The move comes amid concerns over Tiktok sharing user data with the Chinese government or that the Chinese government would manipulate content for a pro-China agenda.

It is still unclear if support remains sufficient for the bill to get past the 60 votes required in the Senate for the ban to advance.

The bill gives Tiktok’s parent company ByteDance six months to divest from Tiktok or face a ban in the US.
