Renowned Peshmerga and comedic actor, Barzan Qadir dies at the age of 63

Barzan Qadir, also known as Barzani Qalay Khaluz, a courageous Peshmerga fighter and a skilled comedic actor, passed away at the age of 63 after a long career in acting.

Born in 1961 in the Kaneskan neighborhood of Sulaymaniyah, Barzani Qalay Khaluz began his journey by working alongside his father after leaving high school.

At the age of 18, he joined the Peshmerga, fearlessly operating in Sulaymaniyah and aiding in the organization of Peshmerga forces before moving to the mountains in 1979 to continue his resistance.

Despite the challenges he faced as a Peshmerga fighter, Barzan was admired for his wit and humor among his comrades.

He went on to co-found the popular Kurdish TV show, “Barnamay Barnama,” which combined comedy and critique to shed light on the struggles of the Kurdish people in a light-hearted manner.

Barzan’s role as a supervisor on the show endeared him to audiences with his warm words and humor, leading to lasting memories and catchphrases that viewers continue to enjoy on social media. Apart from his TV work, he starred in two films, “Khula Piza” and “Burnt Paradise.”

Following the conclusion of the program in 2010, Barzan took a step back from the media spotlight but made a comeback earlier this year, bringing joy to viewers with his comedic charm.

He passed away on June 18, 2024, at the age of 63 and will be laid to rest in Sulaymaniyah, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and camaraderie in the hearts of many.
