Iraq’s military reported that seven Islamic State (IS) militants were killed in a series of airstrikes targeting their hideouts in Saladin province, located north of Baghdad.

The strikes were conducted based on intelligence gathered by Iraqi forces, which led to two separate airstrikes on IS hideouts and a tunnel used by the extremists in a mountainous region in the province’s northeastern area.

The Security Media Cell, a media outlet affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, released a statement confirming the airstrikes on Saturday. According to the statement, which did not specify the timing of the bombings, the attacks resulted in the death of seven IS militants, including a prominent member of the group.

Although the security situation in Iraq has shown improvement since the defeat of IS in 2017, remnants of the militant group have managed to infiltrate urban areas, deserts, and rugged terrains. These remnants continue to pose a threat by carrying out sporadic guerilla attacks against security personnel and civilians.
