Kurdistan Region Security Agency: Lahur Forces Opened Fire First, Killing One and Injuring Several Security Officers
The spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Security Agency (Asayish), Salam Abdulkhaleq, announced to Channel8 that Lahur Sheikh Jangi, has been detained and is being held in an Asayish facility. According to the spokesperson, Lahur is in good health and has not been injured.
Abdulkhaleq explained that the clashes in Lalezar began when armed forces of Lahur opened fire first, killing one officer and injuring several others.
He further stated that Lahur had been formally summoned through legal channels to appear before court but refused. Instead, the confrontation escalated into armed violence. The Asayish spokesperson emphasized that the incident is being dealt with strictly within the framework of judicial rulings and to ensure law, order, and public security.
According to official figures, 19 to 20 individuals were injured during the Lalezar clashes. Most of the wounded have already received treatment and left hospital care.
The Asayish also confirmed that around 150 armed men involved in the incident were arrested and are currently under investigation. Their cases will be processed in accordance with the law and decided by the judiciary.
Abdulkhaleq added that Lahur’s brother, Polad Sheikh Jangi, was slightly wounded during the clashes and will be transferred to prison once discharged from the hospital. Another associate, Rebwar Hama Haji Ghali, has also been taken into Asayish custody.
The confrontation began on Thursday night, when security forces—acting under judicial orders—moved to detain Lahur Sheikh Jangi at the Lalezar Hotel. He refused to surrender, and a firefight broke out that lasted for nearly three hours. By Friday morning, Lahur, along with his brothers Polad and Aso Sheikh Jangi, was detained. Later, Rebwar Hama Haji Ghali and the remaining armed forces in Lalezar surrendered to Asayish.
According to the Kurdistan Region Security Agency, the Lalezar incident stemmed from information that Lahur Sheikh Jangi's militia group, the Scorpion Force, with the support of Azhi Ameen, who supplied drones and armed militias, plotted to carry out a coup involving assassinations and drone attacks. The agency stated that the Lalezar group sought to destabilize the region by targeting senior Kurdish officials, including PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani, as well as several government and security figures.
The Kurdistan Region Security Agency released video confessions from members of the Lalezar group, in which they admitted to planning to carry out assassination plots and attacks on government institutions across Sulaymaniyah and Halabja provinces, as well as the Garmian and Raparin independent administrations.
The Sulaymaniyah Appeal Court had instructed Lahur Sheikh Jangi to formally surrender through legal procedures and in a civilized manner, but he refused. Consequently, security forces acted under the court's order.
