- 2027 budget: Al-Zaidi said the government is preparing the 2027 budget for submission to the Council of Representatives.
- Anti-corruption: Parliamentary representatives expressed support for government measures targeting corruption and pursuing financial and administrative reform.
Al-Zaidi met with members of the Al-Sadiqoun Parliamentary Bloc, headed by MP Uday Awad al-Tamimi.
The meeting covered national issues, development, public services across the governorates, and cooperation between the executive and legislative branches.
The prime minister highlighted the legislature’s oversight and lawmaking responsibilities, particularly in monitoring state institutions and supporting efforts to combat corruption.
He also said the government plans to increase oil production and exports in the coming years while giving significant attention to the electricity sector in the upcoming budget.
The head of the al-Sadiqoun bloc expressed support for the government’s policies, including its efforts on corruption, financial and administrative reform, and protecting national resources.
Al-Zaidi separately received Hammam Ali Mahdi al-Tamimi, head of the Badr Parliamentary Bloc, and members of the bloc.
The meeting addressed the country’s political, economic, and security situation, alongside the government’s reform and development programs.
Al-Zaidi said the government’s program is focused on building a state based on a strong economy and finding fundamental solutions to longstanding problems through a new approach.
Al-Zaidi said the Popular Mobilization Forces have the government’s attention and support.
He confirmed that the government will submit the Popular Mobilization Forces Bill for approval, maintaining that the PMF forms part of the formations and branches of Iraq’s Armed Forces.
He also said Iraq is entering a phase of reconstruction and development after meeting the requirements needed to defend its sovereignty.
FYI
The Iraqi government is preparing to submit the 2027 federal budget to the Council of Representatives by early October, introducing a new model based on project performance rather than traditional spending. Ministries will receive funding only for projects that can be finished within one year.
The draft does not have a final oil price benchmark yet, but officials expect it to be set between $60 and $65 per barrel. There are no plans to change the value of the Iraqi dinar, even though headline inflation has risen to 4.3%. Finance authorities are still finalizing the targets, but they have enough time to complete the plan before the deadline.
At the same time, proposed legislation concerning the Popular Mobilization Forces remains part of broader efforts to establish the legal framework governing the role of state security institutions and armed formations.
