Two California friends have set a Guinness World Record after completing a massive Lego World Map in less than five hours.
Key Statements and Focus Area
- Building Strategy: “We realized one color at a time actually speeds you up a lot because the colors are already there for you to use.” — Sevy Swift.
- Shared Passion: “When I met Sevy a year ago, we quickly bonded over our shared love of Lego, along with many other interests.” — Athena Leong.
- Focus Area: The record attempt combined intensive preparation with a coordinated building strategy to complete one of Lego’s largest commercially available 2D sets.
Five-Hour Challenge
Leong and Swift attempted the record on April 12 at Brick by Brick Toys in Hayward, California, after preparing for a month.
The Lego World Map contains 11,695 pieces and is described as the largest commercially available 2D Lego set.
The pair's final time was 4 hours, 59 minutes and 51 seconds, finishing 30 minutes and nine seconds faster than the Guinness World Records target of 5 hours and 30 minutes.
Practice And Precision
The friends developed their approach during weeks of preparation, working out how to organize the thousands of pieces and determine the most efficient sequence for assembling the map.
Swift said sorting pieces by color helped them move more quickly, while the order in which pieces were placed became increasingly important toward the end of the build.
For Leong, the attempt also connected to a longstanding interest in Lego. She said the building system had been a way to express her imagination since childhood.
FYI
The Lego World Map is designed as a large wall display made from thousands of small pieces and allows builders to customize elements of the finished map. Its scale makes organization and sustained concentration central to completing the set.
Leong and Swift's attempt took place at a California toy store after their month-long preparation, turning a shared hobby into a timed Guinness World Records challenge.
