The caretaker Kurdistan Region Government has approved five strategic water projects as part of plans to strengthen water infrastructure and improve access to drinking water.
Ari Ahmed Qadir, Director General of Water and Sewerage in the Kurdistan Region, said the projects will be financed through government revenues, either from domestic revenues or under the Ministry of Municipalities’ plan.
He said the expected implementation period is between one and two years, although contractors could complete the projects earlier and begin operating them ahead of schedule.
The projects include measures to provide drinking water to residents of Soran, Khabat, Kalar and Koya, while a separate project will expand the Qandil–Pirmam–Shaqlawa water network.
According to the caretaker KRG, all engineering and administrative preparations required for immediate implementation have been completed. Work will begin once the necessary financial allocations are made available by the government.
The caretaker government says the projects form part of a broader approach based on advance planning and preparing projects before implementation.
It says completing the projects in the coming phase will help establish stronger water infrastructure and provide services to hundreds of thousands of residents in the targeted areas.
FYI
The projects come as the Kurdistan Region seeks to strengthen long-term water security through additional infrastructure rather than relying solely on existing supply networks. Their stated one-to-two-year implementation period means the immediate impact will depend on financing, contracting and construction progress.
The caretaker KRG’s emphasis on advance engineering and administrative preparation also indicates an effort to move projects into implementation once funding becomes available, while the expansion of the Qandil–Pirmam–Shaqlawa network is intended to improve the regional distribution system.
