During the running of the Rome marathon on Sunday, three climate activists belonging to the group Last Generation caused a disruption before being arrested by the police, according to the organization’s report.

The activists brought the race to a halt at 9:00 am (0800 GMT) before being escorted to the roadside and detained by law enforcement, Last Generation stated.

The group forecasted a season marked by climate-related risks for Italy, with rising temperatures leading to “fatalities in workplaces due to heat and the inhabitable conditions of cities.”

One of the detained protesters, Mida, a 26-year-old student, expressed her concerns in the statement, emphasizing the urgent need to raise awareness about the impending drought.

Last Generation has called upon the government to establish a reparations fund of 20 billion euros ($22 billion) to assist individuals affected by climate change.

In recent actions, Last Generation activists have resorted to drastic measures like splattering soup, cakes, and paint on cultural heritage sites and artworks in museums to draw attention to their cause.

The scientific community underscores that human-induced climate change is amplifying the severity, frequency, and duration of extreme weather events like droughts, heatwaves, and wildfires.
