Nine Syrian regime soldiers and members of Iran-backed forces were killed in an attack by gunmen linked to former al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Sunday.

The war monitor said “Red Bands” and the “Armored Brigade” affiliated with HTS staged an infiltration operation at the Qubtan al-Jabal frontline in the western countryside of Aleppo.

Intense clashes broke out with heavy weapons and machine guns, SOHR said.

Seven people were injured and a tank was destroyed before the HTS gunmen returned to their positions.

SOHR said the operation was the second of its kind launched by HTS against regime positions since the beginning of Ramadan.

Three regime soldiers, including a captain, were killed in an HTS attack on March 11 in the Latakia countryside.
