Iranian civil society activists say suicides among young doctors and students have increased and the government does not seem to have a solution.

Hamid Parvi, vice president of the Iranian Suicide Prevention Association, told the official IRNA news agency that 120,000 people attempted suicide in Iran last year, of whom 6,000 died. Parvi said the suicide rate in Iran has increased by 51 percent compared to seven years ago.

According to the government website Khabar Online, suicide among young doctors in Iran has reached a dangerous level, with an average of 13 young Iranian doctors committing suicide every year.

“We have asked the authorities to address this problem, but it seems that the problems are being ignored until they reach the level of crisis,” Nima Shahrivarpour, a doctor at Tehran’s Baharloo Hospital, told Khabar Online.

According to another statistic, eight students committed suicide in a month, and VOA quoted local sources as saying that suicides are generally more common in Kurdish areas.
