Turkey has rejected Israeli claims over a possible Turkish military presence at a Syrian airbase, as the dispute draws concern from Washington and adds to tensions over Syria.

Key Statements and Focus Area

  • Turkey: Israeli attacks on Syrian territory are “illegal” and cannot be justified by claims of Turkish deployments.
  • Israel: The alleged Turkish presence at Abu al-Duhur was described as a threat to “Israeli national security.”
  • Washington: US officials reportedly viewed the strike as an “unnecessary escalation.”
  • Syria: Damascus says work at the airbase was not intended for aggression.

The Turkish Presidency has rejected Israel’s claim that Turkey stationed forces at the Abu al-Duhur airbase near Aleppo.

Ankara said Israel’s military operations against Syrian territory cannot be justified by allegations concerning Turkish deployments and accused Israel of violating Syrian sovereignty.

Turkey said it would continue cooperating with the Syrian government within a legal framework to support peace and stability.

Ankara also accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of pursuing aggressive policies for domestic political and electoral purposes.

Israel has said Syria was approaching a violation of a security agreement by allowing Turkish forces to deploy at Abu al-Duhur.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said a potential Turkish deployment, including advanced weapons systems, would pose a direct threat to Israeli national security.

Israel acknowledged carrying out the strike on the base, saying the operation was intended to prevent Turkey from establishing a military presence there.

According to Axios, Israel used eight bombs in the attack, causing extensive damage to the facility’s runways.

The Trump administration has reportedly expressed strong concern over the Israeli strike, describing it as an unnecessary escalation that could undermine regional stability.

US officials cited by Axios reportedly said Washington believes Netanyahu’s government may have ordered the attack partly for political reasons ahead of Israel’s October elections.

The United States has also urged Damascus to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation until after the Israeli elections.

The dispute comes as Syria works to rebuild and stabilize following years of conflict, while Turkey continues cooperation with Damascus.

Syria has said efforts to renovate Abu al-Duhur airbase were not intended for aggressive purposes and has criticized Israel for continuing military operations in southern Syria.

The latest confrontation adds to tensions between Israel and Turkey over Syria, while Washington is seeking to prevent further escalation from undermining stability in the country.

FYI

The Abu al-Duhur airbase, located in Syria’s Idlib region, has strategic significance because of its location and military infrastructure. The latest dispute reflects broader tensions over the future security architecture of Syria and the roles of regional powers following years of conflict.

The disagreement also comes amid competing Israeli and Turkish security interests in Syria, with Washington balancing its relationships with both countries while seeking to limit further regional escalation.
