A third group of displaced people from Sere Kaniye has returned to their home areas after years of displacement, as a broader return process continues in Rojava.

Key Statements and Focus Area

  • Return Process: More than 3,200 people from around 30 villages are returning in the third convoy.
  • Assistance: Returning families are receiving $2,000 in financial support, while security forces are overseeing the repatriation process.
  • Housing: Some families face difficulties returning because their homes are currently occupied by other residents or displaced people.

The convoy departed Hasakah on the morning of October 5, carrying families returning to villages in the countryside of Sere Kaniye, Zirgan, and Tel Tamer. According to Channel8 correspondent Avin Sheikhmous, two of the villages included in the return process, Daas and Dawudiya, are Kurdish villages.

Plans had initially been made for 140 Kurdish families to return. However, some have encountered a housing problem because their homes are currently occupied by other citizens and displaced people. Among today's returnees are 108 families who had been staying at Washokani camp.

The latest convoy follows two previous stages of the process. The first convoy, involving 400 families, returned on August 10, while a second convoy of 689 families returned on September 8. Together, the three convoys represent a continuing effort to facilitate the return of people displaced from the Sere Kaniye area.

FYI

Sere Kaniye, also known as Ras al-Ain, has experienced major displacement since Turkey's military operation in northeastern Syria in October 2019. The operation and subsequent fighting forced large numbers of residents from the area.

The current return process involves families from villages around Sere Kaniye as well as areas near Zirgan and Tel Tamer. Housing availability remains an important factor in determining whether displaced families can return and settle in their original communities.
