Escalation and Security Interventions

  • Demonstrations and Provocations: Protests initially surged with the raising of state flags, culminating in heightened rhetoric and threats against Kurdish residents and local security forces during municipal preparations outside the city courthouse.
  • Clashes and Arrests: Following counter-demonstrations by young Kurdish residents protesting insults to their symbols, security forces intervened with live fire, leaving several civilians injured. Authorities subsequently launched operations resulting in the arrest of 13 suspects linked to violence and public property attacks.
  • Current Status: Following Friday prayers, renewed attempts by groups to enter Kurdish neighborhoods were blocked by internal security forces, keeping the city under a tight security cordon.

Beginning of the Demonstration by Residents of the Two Neighborhoods:

  • On the 2nd of this month, they held their first demonstration.
  • They raised the Syrian flag and several other flags.

Preparations for Raising the Syrian Flag:

Last Thursday, while the administration of the city of Hasakah, in the presence of provincial officials, was making preparations to raise the Syrian flag in front of the city's courthouse building, a group of Arabs gathered once again and threatened the Kurds.

Following the conclusion of the Arab demonstration, a number of Kurdish youths demonstrated in protest against the insults directed at their symbols. However, clashes broke out during the demonstration; the security forces indiscriminately fired upon the Kurdish demonstrators, resulting in injuries to a number of civilians in the city and damage to several vehicles.

13 People Arrested:

According to Channel 8 information, up until now, 13 people have been arrested in internal security operations on charges of disturbing the peace of the city. According to security sources, these individuals are accused of attacking public institutions, chanting violent slogans, and violating the ban on carrying weapons.

Following Friday prayers, some Arab residents of those two neighborhoods in Hasakah once again demonstrated and intended to enter the Kurdish-populated neighborhoods and public squares of the city. However, they were blocked by the internal security forces. Currently, a large security force has been deployed throughout the city.

FYI

For the past three days, Hasakah Governorate in Rojava (Western Kurdistan) has been passing through a complex security situation.

These tensions follow the historic August 2026 dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as they integrate into the central Syrian state.

Severe tensions and widespread protests erupted across Kobani, Qamishlo, and Amuda on September 11 following the brutal abduction and murder of Sami Sheikhmous Hasso (known locally as Sipan Hizni).

The rallies have reignited severe Kurdish-Arab friction across the province. During the initial October 2 rallies, some Arab demonstrators publicly burned the Kurdish flag, triggering immediate outrage and subsequent counter-protests by Kurdish residents defending their cultural symbols.

Arab demonstrators today marched to demand that the central government assume administrative and military control over the entire province.

Arab citizens from the Ghuwayran neighborhood and other areas of Hasakah have launched attacks and assaults on Kurdish neighborhoods and symbols in the city, aiming to eliminate signs of the Autonomous Administration and enforce state authority.

This sparked strong counter-protests from Kurdish residents, particularly after some demonstrators publicly burned the Kurdish flag, prompting eight Kurdish political parties to warn against dangerous social conflict.

In response, Internal Security Forces have set up strict cordons to separate communities, blocking Arab demonstrators from entering Kurdish-majority neighborhoods.

Despite these containment efforts, localized clashes and acts of vandalism by Arab demonstrators have broken out, leading to multiple injuries and arrests.
