The International Monetary Fund has raised its 2026 global growth forecast to 3.1% from 3.0%, while warning that higher energy prices, rising borrowing costs, and debt linked to artificial intelligence are increasing risks to the world economy.
Key Statements and Focus Area
- Global Outlook: “The outlook is highly uneven.” — Silvana Tenreyro, IMF research director

- Focus Area: Uneven global growth, energy market disruption, rising debt, and the economic risks associated with AI.
Global Growth Outlook
In its latest World Economic Outlook, the IMF projected global growth of 3.1% in 2026, below the 3.5% expansion recorded in 2025. Growth is expected to recover to 3.4% in 2027.
The United States economy is forecast to grow by 2.3% in both 2026 and 2027. Advanced economies collectively are expected to expand by 2.1% this year before slowing to 1.9% in 2027.
The forecasts assume that oil prices will rise by nearly 41% this year to an average of $96 per barrel, shipments of oil and gas through the Strait of Hormuz will resume by March, and demand for AI-related products will moderate. Global inflation is projected to reach 4.7% in 2026 before falling to 4.1% in 2027.
AI Boom Brings Uneven Benefits
The IMF said investment and demand linked to artificial intelligence were helping offset the economic damage caused by higher oil and gas prices. However, the benefits remain concentrated in a limited number of countries.
The United States and China account for more than three-quarters of net demand for imported computer chips and other AI-related equipment, according to the report.
The fund also warned of financial risks associated with AI, including a potential correction in stock markets, rising bond yields, and cyberattacks that could disrupt financial systems.
Georgieva said the impact of AI could affect about 40% of jobs worldwide through changes that augment, downgrade, or eliminate existing roles.
Debt and Regional Economic Pressures
The IMF warned that governments need to strengthen public finances as borrowing costs remain high and debt levels rise. Debt linked to AI investment adds to concerns about financial stability.
Emerging and developing economies are forecast to grow by 3.7% in 2026, down from 4.5% in 2025, before recovering to 4.4% in 2027.
The Middle East and Central Asia face a sharper outlook, with their economies projected to contract in 2026 before returning to growth in 2027. The IMF forecasts growth of 6.3% for the combined regions next year.
China’s economy is expected to expand by 4.5% this year, down from 5% in 2025, while India is forecast to grow by 7%, compared with 7.7% last year. The 21 countries that use the euro are projected to grow by 1.1% in 2026 and 1.2% in 2027.
