The Agriculture Committee of the Iraqi Council of Representatives has recommended to the Iraqi Parliament Presidency the closure of the unofficial border crossings in the Kurdistan Region, saying that they pose a serious threat to domestic production and are against the federal authorities.

Samal Abdulrahman, Director General of Kurdistan Region Customs, said that a committee should be formed to assess Kurdistan’s border crossings.

He added that the committee should determine which unofficial crossings are eligible for official recognition and recommend the closure of those that do not meet the required conditions.

“Most of these border crossings have already become operational and require official recognition from Baghdad. However, due to the Kurdistan Region’s focus on salary-related matters, progress in addressing this issue has been very slow.”

There are eight unofficial border crossings in the Kurdistan Region that are not recognized by the federal government.
