On the anniversary of the March 11 agreement, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said in a message that the Kurdish people will never allow their rights to be violated.

“Today marks the 54th anniversary of the declaration of the March 11, 1970 agreement, which was a historic achievement of the Aylul revolt,” Barzani said in his message.

He said that the revolution, resistance, and sacrifices of the Kurdish people forced the former Iraqi government to acknowledge some of the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people, particularly, they agreed to recognize Iraq as consisting of two main nations, Arabs and Kurds, and the constitution recognizing the national rights of the Kurdish people.

“The former Iraqi regime violated the agreement and waged war against the Kurdish people, resulting in widespread destruction and lasting turmoil in Iraq. The Iraqi people continue to bear the consequences,” he added.

“On this occasion, we stress the need and importance of protecting and respecting the constitutional rights of the Kurdish people and the constitutional entity of the Kurdistan Region.”

The 1970 Iraqi-Kurdish Autonomy Agreement was a deal struck between the Iraqi government and Mustafa Barzani, the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), on March 11, 1970, following the First Iraqi-Kurdish War.
