US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed optimism on Thursday regarding the advancement of discussions toward normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia, despite delays caused by the conflict in Gaza.

During a press conference in Cairo, Blinken reported positive outcomes from his recent visit to Saudi Arabia, noting “very good progress” in conversations with Saudi leaders regarding closer bilateral relations.

While refraining from specifying a timeline, Blinken indicated that agreements between the two countries were nearing fruition, suggesting that discussions were reaching an advanced stage.

Additionally, Blinken addressed ongoing negotiations in Qatar aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, stating that the “gaps are narrowing” and emphasizing the US’s commitment to facilitating an agreement.

Expressing concern over potential military escalation, Blinken cautioned against a major Israeli operation in Gaza’s Rafah, labeling it as “a mistake” and advocating for alternative strategies to address the threat posed by Hamas.
