Kurdistan Region commemorates 1991 uprising anniversary

Remarks by Kurdistan Region officials and leaders on the 33rd anniversary of the 1991 Kurdish uprising on Tuesday.

President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Jalal Talabani said in a statement that “we proudly commemorate the historic uprising of the Kurdish people” and “remember all those heroic and struggling Peshmergas who gave the good news of a brighter future to Kurdistan”

He stressed that the PUK is not and will not be the force that turns its back on its people.

“We will set right the wrong political and governance course and ensure the protection of the Kurdish constitutional position in the center of political decision-making in Baghdad.”

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani emphasized the importance of protecting the federal structure of the Kurdistan Region, along with the high values of the Kurdish uprising and the principles of peaceful coexistence, peace, and humanity.

He stressed that the sovereignty of all Kurdish people is contingent upon the existence of the Kurdistan Region.

On the anniversary of the 1991 Kurdish uprising, Barzani said in a statement that the uprising stands as one of the most significant and fruitful events in Kurdistan’s history. 

He added that it’s a source of great pride and sovereignty for the Kurdish people, stemming from the unity of all classes, communities, and Kurdish forces and parties.

“May the anniversary of the uprising encourage us to support the constitutional structure of the Kurdistan Region and the Kurdistan Regional Government, enabling them to deliver more deserving services to all Kurdish people, and together take the Kurdistan Region towards a more developed stage.”

On the anniversary of the uprising, Kurdistan Region President Nechrivan Barzani said that history has proved that disagreements and division are very bitter experiences and have caused great damage to the opportunities, position and achievements

“The Kurdish people can stand against the threats to the constitutional entity of the Kurdistan Region through unity,” he said.

“The success of the uprising should remain a lesson and a roadmap for all of us. Let us join hands with faith and hope to overcome the challenges and obstacles, striving for a brighter future.”

Meanwhile, Leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Masoud Barzani said in a statement that the achievements, goals and values of the uprising must remain high, protected and strengthened.

March 5, 2024, marks the 33rd anniversary of the Kurdistan Region’s uprising against the former Ba’ath regime. The movement began in Ranya and quickly spread to all cities and towns, leading to liberation within days
