Some of the Iraqi Turkmen parties in the Kurdistan Region have chosen to abstain from participating in the upcoming parliamentary elections, citing the removal of minority quota seats in the Kurdistan parliament as unconstitutional

At a press conference, the Turkmen parties urged the Iraqi and Kurdistan Region presidencies to intervene and protect their rights

The parties announced their boycott of the sixth term of parliamentary elections until their quota seats are restored.

June 10, 2024, has been set as the date for the sixth term of parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region.

On Saturday, Member of the Political Bureau of the Iraqi Turkmen Front Aydin Maruf said that Turkmens will partake in the Kurdistan parliamentary elections with a list beyond the quota system.

“As the Turkmen Front, we urge all Turkmen political parties to unite and participate in the elections with a single list,” he said.

Under the quota system, Turkmen parties were allocated five seats in the legislature, but following the Iraqi Federal Court’s ruling, they are now required to compete for votes in order to secure a general seat.
