Turkish foreign and defense ministers, MIT chief in Baghdad for Turkey-Iraq security summit

The Turkish Defense Ministry said that a delegation from Turkey will hold discussions regarding border security with Iraqi officials in Baghdad on Thursday.

Iraq and Turkey are set to hold a security meeting in Baghdad, with the Turkish delegation comprising Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defense Minister Yasar Guler, and National Intelligence Agency (MIT) Chief Ibrahim Kalın.

As per a statement, the Turkish delegation and Iraqi officials will engage in discussions on military and security coordination between the two nations, focusing on enhancing cooperation to address the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) presence in the Kurdistan Region.

Other topics of discussion during the meetings will include border security between the two countries and energy issues, it added. 

Regarding the recent meeting between the second commander of the Turkish army, border guards, and Peshmerga forces, the ministry said that the discussions focused on enhancing coordination to bolster the security of citizens and borders.

Another objective of the meeting is to prepare for the upcoming visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region next month.
