Iraqi electoral commission urged to delay Kurdistan elections by 2 months: spox

Spokesperson for the Iraqi High Electoral Commission Jumana Ghalay speaks for Channel8.

Spokesperson for the Iraqi High Electoral Commission Jumana Ghalay said on Monday that the commission had been requested to delay the elections by two months.

Ghalay told Channel8 that as per the Federal Court’s decision, the commission is obligated to conduct the elections as scheduled.

She said that the commission has started preparations for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections, with the financial aspects already organized for the elections.

She stressed that voters lacking fingerprints would be ineligible to vote in the Kurdistan parliamentary elections and refuted allegations that 20 percent of voters’ fingerprints were unreadable.

“We have completed all the preparations and possess the essential resources to conduct the elections. The term of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) concludes on July 7,” she added.
