Iraq Receives Assyrian artifacts from Switzerland in ongoing efforts to reclaim cultural heritage

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared today that Switzerland had returned invaluable artifacts linked to the Assyrian civilization to Iraq.

In a statement delivered to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the Foreign Ministry stated: “As part of the ongoing diplomacy to retrieve smuggled Iraqi antiquities, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Fouad Hussein received three exceptionally significant Iraqi antiquities hailing from the ancient Assyrian civilization from Swiss Minister of Internal Affairs Elisabeth Bohm Schneider.”

At the artifact handover ceremony, the minister acknowledged the Swiss government for their cooperation in repatriating the Iraqi cultural heritage, affirming the ministry’s dedication to returning these antiquities to Iraq.

The statement outlined that the retrieved pieces include a statue of the Assyrian sun god and two murals dating back to the Assyrian era BC. The Foreign Ministry has obtained thousands of artifacts from various countries relating to the Mesopotamian civilization, with dozens retrieved from the Swiss government over the past two years.
