KRG DPM asks Erdogan to review flight ban for Iraq’s Sulaimaniyah Airport

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Qubad Talabani, has asked Turkish President Erdogan to reconsider the decision to ban flights for Iraq’s Sulaimaniyah Airport

Talabani shared on his Facebook page about attending a meeting with the Turkish President and his delegation, during which he raised the issue.

“I asked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to review the decision of Turkish airspace to Sulaymaniyah International Airport closure,” Talabani stated.

The situation arose after Turkish Airlines suspended all flights to Sulaymaniyah Airport on April 3, 2023, following the Turkish government’s directive not to permit flights from Turkey to Sulaymaniyah.

Erdogan’s visit to Iraq included meetings with the Iraqi President and Prime Minister, held in Baghdad on Monday, April 22, 2024.

Additionally, Erdogan visited Erbil for discussions with Kurdistan Regional Government officials during the last leg of his visit to Iraq.
